Best remote jobs in 2026: the categories, salaries, and where they're actually hiring
A data-backed look at 115,000+ live remote roles on RemoShift โ the categories with the most openings, the countries hiring fastest, and the seniority mix that actually matters for landing a role.
If you've been looking for a "remote job" the same way you looked for one in 2020, you've been working with an outdated map. The remote-jobs market is now 115,000+ live roles across 15+ categories, and the categories with the most openings aren't the ones most people search for first. This guide is the data-backed view of where the work actually is, what it pays, and which countries are pulling the most new postings.
The state of remote hiring right now
Pulled from RemoShift's live index on 27 August 2026, across 18 source feeds (company ATS boards, regional remote boards, the Hacker News monthly "Who's hiring?" thread, and curated remote-native sources):
- 115,075 live remote jobs
- 63,404 posted in August 2026 (55% of the entire index is fresh this month)
- 14,988 posted in the last 7 days
- 2,824 are open to candidates anywhere in the world (no country restriction)
- 37,134 include a salary
- Hiring employers in 15+ countries with 1,000+ roles each
The short version: remote hiring slowed, then stabilised, and is now growing again โ quietly, in categories most job boards don't surface well.
The 7 categories with the most remote openings
Ranked by number of active remote roles:
- Developer / engineering โ 16,957 roles. The largest single bucket. Frontend, backend, full-stack, mobile, and platform roles across startups and public companies. The most fragmented category: salary range from $40k junior roles to $300k+ staff eng.
- Sales โ 15,507 roles. Inside sales, B2B SaaS, enterprise account executives. The category with the highest number of commission-bearing roles; comp disclosure varies widely.
- Customer service & support โ 6,936 roles. Often the easiest entry point for first-time remote workers. Timezone-restricted (US hours, EU hours) more than other categories.
- Operations โ 5,383 roles. RevOps, sales operations, business operations. Cross-functional roles that often have the broadest range of "remote-friendliness" โ many are hybrid-with-flexibility.
- Marketing โ 5,302 roles. Content, demand-gen, growth, brand, lifecycle. Marketing roles skew toward "remote-friendly but US-timezone-heavy."
- Data science & analytics โ 4,226 roles. Strong overlap with developer hiring. Mid-to-senior only โ entry-level data analyst remote roles are vanishingly rare.
- Product management โ 3,136 roles. Mid-senior heavy. The category where "remote but US/EU timezone" is the de-facto rule even when not stated in the posting.

Seniority mix: where the openings actually are
The split across the 115k live roles:
- Mid-level โ 78,960 (68.6% of openings). The bulk of the market. These are roles for 3โ7 years of experience.
- Senior โ 20,463 (17.8%). Harder to land but well-compensated.
- Lead / director / staff โ 14,604 (12.7%). Fewer roles, higher bar, usually explicit "remote-first team" companies.
- Junior / entry โ 1,048 (0.9%). The honest number. There are not many "remote, junior, no experience required" roles โ most companies now require 2+ years before going fully remote.
If you are early-career and want a remote job, the path is usually: start hybrid or in-office โ prove you can work remote โ negotiate remote as part of your next role. The fully-remote-from-day-one junior market is small and competitive.
Where the work is, by country
The top 10 countries by number of remote roles open to candidates based there (note: a single job can be open to multiple countries, so this is the candidate-side coverage, not job volume):
- United States โ 60,807 roles
- Canada โ 7,458
- United Kingdom โ 6,644
- India โ 5,355
- Germany โ 5,271
- Philippines โ 3,790 (concentrated in customer service and operations)
- Brazil โ 3,176
- Australia โ 2,802
- Mexico โ 2,639
- Spain โ 2,161

If your country is not in the top 15, focus the search with the "Work from anywhere" filter โ it cuts 2,824 roles open globally (no geographic restriction).
The companies hiring the most remotely right now
The employers with the largest live remote footprints on the index:
- Mercor โ 2,199 open remote roles. AI-focused talent marketplace; contract-heavy.
- Bjak โ 2,071. Malaysia-based; heavy in customer service and ops.
- Lifelancer โ 1,637. Healthcare and clinical roles.
- Pavago โ 601. BPO / customer support.
- Welo Global โ 586. Sales-focused BPO.
- OptiMindHealth โ 573. Tele-mental-health clinical roles.
- PradeepIT โ 565. IT services & consulting.
- Binance โ 458. Crypto exchange; remote-friendly.
- Affirm โ 400. US fintech, engineering and ops heavy.
Most of the highest-volume remote employers operate a distributed-by-default model: the company itself is remote, not a traditional office that happens to allow remote. That distinction matters โ distributed companies are better at onboarding and managing remote workers.
What the data tells you about your job search
A few practical takeaways from looking at the numbers:
- If you are an engineer, your market is large and competitive. Developer is the biggest bucket. Specialise. Platform, security, ML, distributed systems โ these are higher-bar but more sustainable than generic "full-stack."
- If you are in sales, the remote market is wide open. Mid-market and enterprise B2B SaaS are hiring remote account executives aggressively. Most roles disclose OTE; expect a base of $60kโ$110k with realistic OTE of $120kโ$200k.
- If you want a first remote job, customer service is the highest-probability entry point โ at the cost of timezone rigidity and a lower salary ceiling. The trade-off is real but the path is well-walked.
- If you are outside the US/UK/EU, the "work from anywhere" filter is your friend. 2,824 globally-open roles is a meaningful subset, and most of them pay in USD or EUR.
- If you are senior (8+ years), the lead/staff/principal bucket is small but pays well โ and these are the roles where being explicitly remote-first is a perk, not a default.
How to actually apply (the part most people skip)
Three rules that hold up across the 115k roles on the index:
- Apply with the same materials the company uses internally. Most remote-friendly companies use an ATS (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby). The job ad is the form. Read it twice before clicking "submit application."
- The first line of your application is the most important. Don't open with "I'm excited to apply for the X role at Y company." Open with the single fact about yourself that makes you the right person for this specific role.
- One application done well beats five done quickly. A targeted cover note (3 paragraphs, not a generic template) and a portfolio link that matches the job doubles your callback rate.
Where to start today
You don't need to read more guides. You need to look at roles:
- Browse all 115,075 remote jobs โ default sort is newest, filter from the sidebar
- Jobs posted in the last 7 days โ narrow to what hiring managers are looking at this week
- Work-from-anywhere only โ globally open roles
- Show only roles with disclosed salary โ skip the "DOE" postings
