The role

The Learning Designer role at Valenture Institute is primarily responsible for designing, developing and quality assuring secondary school course content and learning activities for online delivery, in line with curriculum requirements, SACAI requirements and Valenture’s internal learning design standards. The incumbent is responsible for delivering high-quality course content within agreed scope and timelines, and for ensuring that their work meets the required curriculum, quality and learning design standards.
Key responsibilities
Curriculum, Learning & Assessment Design

- Use the relevant curriculum, subject and assessment requirements to ensure that course content is accurate, appropriately scoped and aligned to the required NSC and SACAI standards.

- Conduct planning and analysis in subject area to recommend appropriate design solutions and strategies for online delivery.

- Use Valenture’s learning management system and available learning technologies to make appropriate design decisions for online learning.

- Design appropriate formative learning, practice and mastery activities that help learners build and demonstrate understanding as they progress through the course.

- Design and develop curriculum-aligned summative assessments, including the associated marking guidelines and assessment materials, in accordance with CAPS, NSC, SACAI and Valenture assessment requirements.

Content development & production

- Develop and adapt curriculum-aligned source material into engaging, pedagogically sound online learning experiences using Valenture’s approved development tools and formats.

- Research and source appropriate reference materials to support course development.

- Collaborate with relevant Product, Learning Technology and production specialists to create supporting media and interactive learning elements where required.

- Develop educational content from scratch, making use of various sources, into a richly augmented format that meets online delivery objectives.

- Perform auxiliary tasks, including, but not limited to briefing in graphics, and tracking the use of external assets.

- Develop content in accordance with Valenture’s agreed learning design principles, development processes, templates, SOPs and quality standards.

Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement

- Review and quality assure their own work against agreed curriculum, learning design and quality requirements before submission for review.

- Participate in peer review and quality assurance activities across courses, and implement feedback arising from review.Perform peer reviews across subjects and qualifications.

- Review the effectiveness of learning design approaches and contribute to ongoing improvements to course content.

- Contribute feedback and recommendations on Learning Design processes and ways of working.

Delivery & Collaboration

- Manage assigned development work against agreed timelines, proactively communicating progress, blockers and delivery risks to the Senior Learning Designer.

- Collaborate effectively with the Senior Learning Designer, other Learning Designers and relevant Product, Learning Technology and operational stakeholders.

- Participate in agreed team rhythms, reviews and development planning activities.

Key requirements

- A relevant teaching qualification, with appropriate subject specialisation for the subject being developed.

- Demonstrated knowledge of the CAPS curriculum and experience teaching or developing learning material in the relevant subject and phase.

- Experience in learning design, curriculum development or the development of high-quality digital learning content is advantageous.

- Experience in the EdTech field is advantageous

- Knowledge of digital learning principles and practices will be advantageous

- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy

- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, and build collaborative work relationships
