Position Overview:

The Manager, Energy Origination is responsible for developing and executing power strategies that support prospective data center developments. This role leads utility and power-market due diligence, builds and manages relationships with utilities and other industry stakeholders, and identifies scalable, commercially viable power solutions. The position also originates, structures, and negotiates the utility service, energy supply, and infrastructure agreements necessary to secure those solutions across Montera’s development portfolio.

The ideal candidate brings deep utility and power-market expertise, strong commercial acumen, and a proven ability to drive complex initiatives from strategy through execution. Success in this role is defined by the ability to develop credible power strategies, evaluate and communicate risks and opportunities, advance critical external negotiations, and deliver clear, decision-ready recommendations that support both investment decisions and customer commitments.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables :

Energy Origination, Site Strategy & Utility Relationships

· Lead the identification and advancement of data center sites with viable, scalable power solutions, including the negotiation and execution of related utility service, energy supply, and infrastructure contracts.

· Own site-specific power strategies covering utility service, market supply, grid infrastructure, onsite or bridge generation, natural gas supply and pipeline access, storage, and other viable solutions.

· Lead utility and energy due diligence, establish workplans and priorities, and evaluate capacity, schedule, cost, reliability, infrastructure, interconnection pathways, and commercial risk.

· Establish and manage trusted relationships with utilities, cooperatives, transmission providers, ISO/RTO stakeholders, generators, developers, regulators, and other market participants.

· Originate, assess, and advance utility service, energy supply, infrastructure, and strategic partnership opportunities that improve speed, certainty, flexibility, or economics.

· Lead commercial evaluation and negotiation of energy service agreements, capacity commitments, large-load tariff obligations (e.g., minimum demand charges, collateral, and exit fees), infrastructure terms, and energy supply concepts, coordinating required internal approvals.

· Direct utility applications, load requests, system studies, data submissions, responses, and milestone follow-through for prospective sites.

· Translate utility and technical findings into schedule, budget, risk, and investment implications; recommend mitigations and escalate material tradeoffs.

· Own the prioritized pipeline of energy-qualified sites and commercial opportunities, driving next steps and presenting decision materials to leadership.

Power Markets, Commercial Analysis & Development Support

· Maintain a forward view of developments in power markets, utilities, regulation, tariffs, transmission, generation, and large-load policy. Monitor FERC and ISO/RTO reforms affecting large-load interconnection and co-location, as well as state large-load tariff proceedings, and translate relevant developments into actionable site strategies.

· Lead evaluation of grid capacity, generation economics, pricing, contract tenor, resource adequacy, risk allocation, and infrastructure requirements.

· Own financial and commercial models for utility service, generation assets, PPAs, microgrids, behind-the-meter power, storage, and other structured solutions.

· Lead utility solicitations, partner outreach, commercial evaluations, and regulatory engagement in coordination with internal stakeholders.

· Develop and recommend approaches to improve site economics and speed to power, including phased service, flexible or curtailable load arrangements, customer-funded infrastructure, onsite generation, storage, and renewable supply.

· Coordinate cross-functional stakeholders across Development, finance, legal, engineering, construction, operations, sustainability, and customer-facing teams to align energy decisions with investment and delivery priorities.

· Drive operational excellence in energy origination and utility diligence by establishing clear standards and quality expectations, identifying gaps, and implementing corrective actions and repeatable practices across the portfolio.

· Use GIS and other market, utility, and infrastructure data to support site screening and power analysis; help define, test, and improve GIS datasets, workflows, and analytical capabilities in partnership with technical teams.

Qualifications :

· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy, Business, Finance, Economics, Real Estate, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.

· 10+ years of experience in energy origination, utility strategy, power marketing, project development, power infrastructure, large-load development, data centers, utilities, or independent power production.

· Demonstrated ownership of complex power opportunities from early diligence through commercial definition, including utility applications, studies, schedules, risks, and milestones.

· Strong knowledge of electric utilities, transmission and distribution systems, generation, grid capacity, interconnection, tariffs, rate structures, energy procurement, and large-load requirements.

· Knowledge of U.S. organized power markets and regulated and competitive utility structures, with deep understanding of power generation economics.

· Experience advising and influencing utilities, hyperscalers, data center operators, developers, or other large-load stakeholders on energy investments and long-term power strategies.

· Strong financial-modeling and commercial judgment, including independent evaluation of generation assets, PPAs, microgrids, behind-the-meter solutions, pricing, risk allocation, and contract terms.

· Strong executive communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to set priorities, lead cross-functional workstreams, make recommendations with incomplete information, and escalate material decisions appropriately.

Preferred Skills :

· Experience supporting hyperscale data centers, powered land, large industrial loads, or other energy-intensive developments.

· Experience originating, structuring, negotiating, or administering utility service, energy supply, interconnection, infrastructure, renewable energy, or other power-related agreements.

· Familiarity with PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO, Western (WECC) markets, or other relevant U.S. power markets and utility jurisdictions.

· Experience evaluating onsite generation, bridge power, renewable energy, battery storage, microgrids, natural gas supply arrangements, or behind-the-meter solutions for large loads.

· Familiarity with site selection, land control, zoning, entitlement, environmental constraints, permitting, fiber, water, gas, and other development considerations.

· Experience using GIS or map-based tools for site screening and infrastructure analysis, with the ability to translate business needs into data requirements, workflows, testing, and capability improvements.

· Existing relationships with utilities, cooperatives, transmission providers, generators, economic-development organizations, or other power-industry participants in priority markets.

· Remote Work : When not traveling or attending required in-person activities, this role is primarily remote. The employee is expected to maintain a professional, reliable remote work setup, including consistent internet access, appropriate availability during working hours, and a workspace that supports focused work, confidential conversations, and virtual meetings.

The employee may be required to sit or stand for extended periods, use a computer and other office equipment, participate in virtual and in-person meetings, and communicate regularly by phone, video, email, and messaging platforms.
