JOB DESCRIPTION FOR AN AU SENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Your Responsibilities as a Senior Accountant would be:
• Prepare and review General Ledgers, Profit & Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, depreciation schedules, and complete supporting workpapers and files ready for manager review.
• Prepare and lodge Income Tax Returns for individuals, companies, trusts, and partnerships — including complex matters such as Division 7A loans, trust distribution resolutions, income tax reconciliations, Capital Gains Tax (CGT), and Small Business Concessions.
• Prepare monthly Instalment Activity Statements (IAS) and quarterly Business Activity Statements (BAS), and assist with broader taxation matters including Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), GST, and other compliance obligations.
• Review client accounting records in Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks Online, and LodgeiT to ensure accuracy and produce timely management reports.
• Manage full job lifecycles — from work-in-progress through review, client sign-off, and final lodgment — following up with the Accounting Operations Manager, Partners, clients, or Administration team to drive timely completion.
• Work within budgeted hours and complete timesheets accurately; report immediately to the Accounting Operations Manager any potential delays or budget overruns.
• Assist the Accounting Operations Manager with designing, implementing, and improving workflows and processes; set a strong example of compliance and best practice for junior team members.
• Build and maintain trusted client relationships; resolve routine client queries and minor accounting/system issues directly, escalating only complex or technical matters requiring formal advice.
• Support administrative compliance tasks including ASIC corporate register maintenance and document management.
Qualifications as a Senior Accountant would be:
• 5–8 years of accounting and business services experience, including at least 3 years of Australian taxation experience within an Australian accounting firm setting.
• CPA qualified (or equivalent professional qualification) is highly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience managing a portfolio of multiple clients across various entity types.
• Proficiency in Xero (Business, Workpapers, Xero Tax), LodgeiT, MYOB, QuickBooks Online, and Microsoft SharePoint; familiarity with Practice Management systems such as Xero Practice Manager (XPM) and FYI Docs is preferred but not essential.
• Exceptional organisational skills, strong attention to detail, and proven ability to prioritise work and meet strict statutory deadlines.
• High degree of initiative, self-motivation, and problem-solving ability; receptive to learning new processes, tools, and methodologies.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with clients, Partners, and internal teams across different time zones.
• Ability to work collaboratively under the direction of the Accounting Operations Manager, follow established workflows, and contribute to continuous improvement.
