VP of Engineering

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a VP of Engineering based in United States.

This is a senior engineering leadership opportunity focused on scaling a high-performing organization from approximately 40 to 80+ engineers while preserving speed, quality, and culture. You will own the operating systems that enable effective planning, decision-making, coordination, and execution as the organization grows. The role combines strategic people leadership and operational excellence with continued hands-on technical involvement. You’ll shape team structures, strengthen engineering leadership, eliminate operational bottlenecks, and drive major cross-functional initiatives. Your work will also influence architecture direction and technical decision-making across the organization. This role is suited to a technically credible leader who has successfully scaled engineering teams and knows how to introduce structure without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.

Accountabilities:
- Scale the engineering organization from approximately 40 to 80+ people while maintaining velocity, code quality, and a strong engineering culture.

- Serve as both the operational and technical leader, keeping teams coordinated and unblocked while contributing to architecture and technical strategy.

- Design lightweight planning cadences, sprint structures, decision-making processes, and coordination rhythms that support growth without adding unnecessary bureaucracy.

- Establish clear documentation and processes that help engineers understand how decisions are made and how teams operate.

- Develop engineering leadership across the organization, including clear growth paths and mechanisms for proactive team coordination.

- Identify and eliminate major operational bottlenecks, with measurable improvements in areas such as prioritization, dependencies, code reviews, meetings, and context switching.

- Own delivery of major cross-team initiatives by defining success criteria, tracking progress, managing dependencies, and escalating risks early.

- Maintain hands-on technical credibility through involvement in code, architecture decisions, technical mentoring, and complex engineering challenges.

- Partner on long-term technical strategy and establish lightweight architecture review practices for significant technical decisions.

- Build scalable feedback loops through skip-level one-on-ones, retrospectives, and a culture that treats code and architecture reviews as opportunities for learning and improvement.

- Collaborate directly with executive leadership as a strategic partner on organizational design, technical direction, and engineering operations.

Requirements:

- Demonstrated experience scaling an engineering organization to approximately 100 people, with a clear understanding of how organizational needs change at different stages of growth.

- Proven experience designing and executing effective engineering operating systems, including planning processes, sprint cycles, dependency management, and risk identification.

- Deep hands-on technical expertise, with the ability to code regularly and engage in sophisticated discussions around architecture, distributed systems, and technical trade-offs.

- Strong track record of shipping significant products or technical initiatives quickly while maintaining high standards for quality.

- Experience coordinating complex cross-functional programs involving four or more teams and managing dependencies, conflicts, and delivery risks.

- Strong people leadership skills, including developing engineering leaders, creating career growth frameworks, and building effective feedback cultures.

- Ability to work closely with founders and hands-on senior leadership, offering thoughtful pushback and contributing as a strategic partner.
