Senior Security Operations Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Security Operations Engineer based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to help build and operate a world-class Security Operations function in a highly distributed engineering environment. You will combine security operations, security engineering, software development, and site reliability practices to protect complex digital infrastructure. The position carries significant technical ownership, with opportunities to lead operational initiatives and improve security capabilities at scale. You will investigate threats, strengthen security controls, automate security processes, and develop tools that improve detection and response. The role also provides opportunities to mentor other engineers and contribute to open source security projects. You may share your expertise through technical publications, threat intelligence, industry conferences, and collaboration with the broader security community.

Accountabilities:
You will provide technical and operational leadership across security operations while helping evolve security platforms, processes, and capabilities.

- Lead and contribute to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a Security Operations Center.

- Monitor security environments, identify threats, investigate incidents, and drive remediation efforts.

- Design and develop security software, tools, and platforms that improve detection, response, and operational efficiency.

- Assess existing security controls and identify opportunities to strengthen the overall security posture.

- Deploy, maintain, automate, and improve security technologies using engineering and reliability practices.

- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to early-career Security Operations engineers.

- Plan and deliver security initiatives within an agile engineering environment.

- Contribute to open source security projects and the wider security community.

- Share expertise through technical blog posts, whitepapers, conference presentations, and threat intelligence initiatives.

Requirements:

You should bring substantial experience across cybersecurity and engineering, with the ability to operate effectively in complex security environments and contribute independently to high-impact initiatives.

- 10+ years of relevant professional experience.

- Professional experience in cybersecurity, preferably within or leading a Security Operations Center.

- Strong professional engineering experience alongside hands-on security expertise.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a compelling alternative professional or academic background.

- Strong academic performance and a demonstrated history of significant professional achievement.

- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python and Bash.

- Working knowledge of Git, GitOps, Infrastructure-as-Code, and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.

- Strong problem-solving, analytical, communication, and technical leadership skills.

- Enthusiasm for contributing to open source security projects and sharing knowledge with the broader community.

- Familiarity with security frameworks such as NIST CSF, CIS Critical Security Controls, and ISO 27001 is valued.

- Knowledge of security architecture and modern security tools is advantageous.

- Hands-on experience in offensive or defensive security teams, advanced persistent threats, or complex security operations is a plus.

- Experience with additional programming languages, particularly Golang, is beneficial.
