Director, Financial Controller - Remote

At Author Health , we're revolutionizing how mental health care is delivered, and we want you to be part of it! Our mission is to bring compassionate, high-quality care to people with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and dementia, including older adults.

We don't just treat symptoms. We treat people - fully, holistically, and with heart! Through our virtual-first, innovative care model, we deliver community-based wrap-around outpatient mental health care inclusive of psychiatric, psychotherapeutic and care management services.

At Author, inclusivity isn't a checkbox. It's how we build trust and drive better outcomes!

Summary/Objective

The Controller owns the accuracy and integrity of Author Health 's accounting operations and financial reporting - the general ledger, the month-end close, revenue recognition, and the annual audit. Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will build the documented, repeatable processes and controls that let our finance function scale with the company. You will also partner with Finance leadership to build on the existing reporting and analytics capabilities, helping graduate Author's financial reporting sophistication as the company grows. This is a hands-on, build-and-lead role for someone who has run accounting at an early-stage or high-growth healthcare company and knows how to professionalize a function without slowing it down.

Essential Functions

-
Own the general ledger, the month-end close, and the accuracy of Author's financial statements - accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the monthly close - as the accountable leader for financial reporting integrity.

-
Maintain, document, and continuously improve Author's accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls; build a close process defined by documented, repeatable steps rather than institutional memory.

-
Own revenue recognition across Author's multiple revenue streams - including fee-for-service, PMPM, and value-based arrangements - with an emphasis on clear documentation and a defined, repeatable process for how each stream is recognized and reviewed.

-
Ensure financial reporting stays structured and consistent across the systems and tools that feed it, so figures reconcile cleanly and reliably from source to report.

-
Lead the annual budget and forecast process; report significant variances to management, and help build the dashboards and reporting that make results and variances easy to understand in real time.

-
Provide financial analysis supporting capital investment decisions, pricing, and contract negotiations.

-
Own audit readiness - maintain audit-ready workpapers and controls, and serve as the primary point of contact for the annual audit.

-
Lead the administration of Author's third-party payroll provider relationship.

-
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal accounting and financial-reporting requirements.

-
Partner with Finance leadership to build on the reporting and analytics work already underway, helping elevate Author's reporting capabilities as the company scales.

-
Build, mentor, and - as headcount and transaction volume justify it - grow an accounting function that operates on defined processes rather than ad hoc effort.

Competency Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

-
Exceptional written and verbal communication, organizational, and time-management skills.

-
Deep command of GAAP accounting and familiarity with recognizing revenue across multiple streams in a multi-payer healthcare environment, with a documentation-first approach to policy and process.

-
Proficient in accounting and financial reporting software; hands-on with Business Central (Dynamics 365) and comfortable building dashboards and reporting in tools such as Looker.

-
Analytical and data-driven - comfortable evaluating financial information and building reporting that turns it into clear, real-time insight.

-
Hands-on operator comfortable i
