The implementation specialist is the least-discussed job in SaaS hiring. It is not engineering, it is not sales, and it does not appear in careers-advice listicles, yet it is one of the largest customer-facing functions in the industry — and one of the most reliably remote. On RemoShift there are 1,386 live remote roles in this family across 758 companies, spanning 92 countries. Nobody writes about it because the title is boring. It pays like a technical job and hires like an operations one.

The reason it matters for a remote job search is simple: the work is delivered over video calls, and it has been since long before 2020. An implementation team spread across three time zones is the normal arrangement, not an experiment. What follows is how the titles break down, what the roles pay, who hires, and how to read the location clause before you spend an evening on an application. For live openings by country, see the United States, Canada, UK and Philippines pages, or the list at the bottom of this page.

What the job actually is

An implementation specialist takes a customer from signed contract to working software. The cycle is consistent across products and industries:

  • Discovery. Interview the customer about how they work today — the process the software is replacing, the people who own it, the reporting they need. This is where a bad implementation is usually lost.
  • Configuration. Build the product to match. In SaaS this is closer to structured administration than programming: fields, workflows, permissions, templates, integrations.
  • Data migration. Get the customer's existing records in, mapped correctly, without duplicating or losing history. Unglamorous and the single most common source of project slippage.
  • Training and enablement. Live sessions with the customer's staff, plus the written material they will use after you leave.
  • Go-live and handover. Watch the first real week, fix what breaks, then transfer the account to support or a customer success manager.

You are not building the product. You are making it work for one organisation, and managing that organisation through the change — which is why communication carries more weight in hiring than technical depth.

Four titles, one job

The family fragments by seniority and by whether the work sits before or after the sale. Across the 1,386 live remote roles, the title split is:

  • Solutions consultant — 219 roles. Pre-sale. You demonstrate, scope and handle technical objections alongside an account executive while the deal is open. Carries revenue influence, so it pays more.
  • Technical account manager — 218 roles. Post-sale and ongoing. You own the technical relationship for a portfolio of accounts, not a single rollout. Common in security, infrastructure and enterprise software.
  • Implementation specialist — 134 roles. The core delivery role, and the most common entry point.
  • Implementation consultant and implementation manager — 123 and 92 roles. The senior end: larger accounts, more concurrent projects, more responsibility for scope and budget.
  • Onboarding specialist — 70 roles, plus 39 titled customer onboarding. The product-led, lower-touch end of the same work, usually handling many small accounts at once instead of a few large ones.

Searching any one of these phrases alone misses most of the market. The implementation specialist, solutions consultant, technical account manager and onboarding specialist tags together cover the whole function.

Salesforce implementation specialist: the largest single slice

When a title names a platform, it is almost always one of a handful. Of the 1,386 live remote roles, the platforms named in the title are SAP (19), Salesforce (17), HubSpot (8), Adobe (6) and Oracle (4), with smaller counts for ServiceNow, Workday, NetSuite and Microsoft Dynamics.

Salesforce is the deepest of those ecosystems and the most remote-friendly. There are 688 live remote Salesforce-titled roles on RemoShift at 304 companies, and the delivery side of that ecosystem — implementation, consulting and administration — is where most of the hiring sits. If you search for a "salesforce implementation specialist" you are looking for one of the most consistently posted roles in enterprise software; the exact phrase is thin in the live inventory, but the surrounding administrator, developer and consultant pools are not. Our guide to remote Salesforce jobs covers the three career tracks in that ecosystem in detail.

The same pattern repeats at a smaller scale around HubSpot, Zoho, Workday and ServiceNow. Platform-specific implementation roles are a good target precisely because the candidate pool is self-limiting: employers cannot hire a Salesforce implementation specialist from the general project-management market, so the competition per opening is thinner than the pay suggests.

What these roles pay

Salary disclosure in this family is better than the site average but still a minority: 580 of the 1,386 live roles publish a number, and 519 of those quote US dollars. Among the USD annual figures the median band runs USD 90,000 to 125,000, with the lower quartile starting at USD 70,000 and the top disclosed band above USD 340,000.

Three things move the number more than the title does:

  • Deal size. Enterprise accounts pay materially more than SMB ones for the same work, because the rollout risk is larger.
  • Whether the role influences revenue. Pre-sale solutions consultants are paid closer to sales than to delivery.
  • Contract versus employment. Independent implementation consultants bill by the day or project and sit above salaried equivalents, at the cost of predictability.

Currency matters as much as the figure. 27 of the disclosed salaries were in Canadian dollars and 16 in euros, and a CAD 150,000 posting is not a USD 150,000 posting. Read the currency before comparing, and see our guide to negotiating a remote salary across timezones before accepting a country-adjusted number without asking.

Remote within a country — not work from anywhere

This is the caveat that decides whether a posting is worth your time. Of the 1,386 live remote roles in the family, only 21 were open to candidates anywhere in the world. 774 were remote within the United States. The remainder were remote within a specific other country — 92 countries appear in the data, led by Canada, the UK, India, the Philippines and Germany.

The reasons are the usual ones: employment law, payroll, and the fact that a minority of rollouts still want someone physically present for go-live week. A posting that says "remote" plus a country name means you must be in that country — it is not a suggestion. If you are outside the major markets, the realistic targets are the distributed-first software companies (whose listings are more likely to be genuinely location-free) and the work-from-anywhere filter on our homepage, which is thin for this family specifically.

Who hires, and why the volume is concentrated

Hiring in this family is unusually concentrated. The largest single hirer accounts for 44 of the 1,386 live roles, the second for 34, and only a handful of employers reach double digits. That shape tells you something useful: implementation hiring is bursty, tied to product launches, funding rounds and enterprise expansion, so a company with an open implementation req usually has several.

The employers split into three groups:

  1. Product companies with a delivery function. Software vendors who implement their own product for enterprise customers. The largest group by volume, the most remote-friendly, and the best pay-to-stability ratio.
  2. Systems integrators and consultancies. Staff delivery teams continuously and post the same role under several title variants. Highest application velocity, most competition, and the most templated rejection.
  3. Managed-service and outsourcing firms. A meaningful share of the junior and coordinator-level listings, often serving several products at once. Fine for a first role; check who the end customer is before applying.

Healthcare, security and finance are the deepest verticals in the data, because those industries buy software that must be configured to a regulated process.

Getting in without a consulting background

Most people arrive in this function sideways. The routes that work:

  • Support first, then delivery. A product support or helpdesk role at a software company puts you inside the product and in front of customers. Moving from support to implementation is a standard internal step and the most common path in.
  • Be the power user. If you administered a platform at a previous employer — a CRM, an HR system, a finance tool — you already have the configuration experience the job needs, with the business context attached.
  • Take the coordinator roles. Only 19 coordinator and 31 associate-level roles were live at the last measurement, but they are the genuine entry points and are under-applied because of the title.
  • Certify deliberately. 349 of 688 remote Salesforce-titled roles mention certification. Pick the platform your existing background already matches and certify on that one, rather than the one that sounds most technical.

How to read an implementation posting

  1. Find the travel line. "Occasional travel" and "up to 25% travel" are different jobs. Go-live support is the usual reason, and it is rarely in the title.
  2. Check the customer size. SMB and enterprise implementations are different careers. Enterprise means longer cycles, more stakeholders and more money; SMB means volume, repetition and faster feedback.
  3. Read the location clause literally. Remote plus a country name means you must be there. See the country pages above before assuming otherwise.
  4. Distinguish pre-sale from post-sale. Solutions consultant is a sales-adjacent role with quota pressure; implementation specialist is a delivery role without it. Both are called "consultant" by recruiters.
  5. Ignore inflated seniority. "Senior" appears on mid-level contract roles constantly in this family — 188 of the live titles carry it. The required-years line is the honest indicator.
