The role: We're looking for an experienced team member to play a key role in the delivery of our bookkeeping and VAT services as well as our quality assurance and system improvement efforts. This is more than a bookkeeping role. You'll be responsible for reviewing work completed by junior team members, ensuring client records are accurate and ready for year-end accounts preparation, supporting clients with day-to-day queries and helping us improve the way we work through better use of technology and systems. You'll work closely with the rest of the team to ensure clients receive a consistently high-quality service. Key responsibilities Client work • Review bookkeeping completed by junior team members. • Review VAT returns before submission. • Ensure bookkeeping records are complete, accurate and up to date. • Prepare reconciliations and supporting schedules for balance sheet accounts. • Prepare client records and ready for year-end accounts preparation. • Investigate and resolve bookkeeping queries and discrepancies. • Manage a portfolio of bookkeeping clients. • Respond to client queries in a timely, friendly and professional manner. • Identify issues, risks and opportunities and escalate where appropriate. Quality and review • Ensure all work meets Oppic's quality standards. • Review files before they progress to the accounts preparation stage. • Provide clear and constructive feedback to junior team members. • Help maintain consistency across client files and working papers. • Support continuous improvement of our bookkeeping processes. Systems and process improvement • Become Oppic's in-house expert in Xenon, helping the team make full use of its features and continuously improving our workflows and internal controls. • Help maximise the use of technology, automation and AI across the practice. • Develop and improve workflows, templates and internal processes. • Identify opportunities to reduce manual work and improve efficiency. • Help implement new systems and software improvements. Team • Support and mentor junior team members. • Share knowledge and best practice with the wider team. • Contribute to team meetings and training sessions. • Work collaboratively across the practice to deliver an excellent client experience. About you: You'll enjoy solving problems, improving processes and helping others produce great work. You take ownership of your responsibilities, communicate well with clients and colleagues and enjoy working in a collaborative environment. Essential skills and experience • Experience working with UK clients. • Strong understanding of UK VAT. • At least 4 years' experience in bookkeeping or accounting. • A proactive approach to identifying and implementing process improvements. • Confident using technology and keen to learn new software. • Excellent knowledge of Xero. • Experience reviewing bookkeeping completed by others. • Experience preparing client records for year-end accounts. • Excellent reconciliation skills and problem-solving skills • Strong attention to detail. • Excellent written and spoken English. • Highly organised with good time management skills. Desirable skills • Previous experience in a UK accountancy practice or managing a portfolio of clients across a range of industries. • Familiarity with Apron, Hubdoc, Dext or similar cloud document management software. • UK payroll knowledge. • Interest in AI and technology to improve efficiency. • Exposure to workflow or practice management software.
